Dawn McMillan is a children’s book author. It’s the 10th anniversary of the publication of his original book, I Need A New Bum! There is now a bilingual edition, Kia Hou Taku Tou! written with Stephanie Huriana Fong.

I read two books at a time. I’m halfway to Still Life by Sarah Winman and I love it. And now I’ve picked up The Mirror Book by Charlotte Grimshaw and I’m captivated. These two stories are so different and no problem for “double dipping”.

* A deputy principal in the US read a New Zealand children’s book to young students – he was fired
* Aotearoa in 20: Rue-Jade Morgan’s Maori culture took him from a childhood surrounded by gangs to a life of helping others
* Kiwi Game of Thrones star Joe Naufahu is back on New Zealand screens in new rugby drama Head High

I like to read memoirs and this year’s favorite book is A Room Made of Leaves by Kate Grenville. The memoir of Elizabeth Macarthur, wife of wool baron John Macarthur, in early Sydney is a dance between what might have been true and what was made up. I decided to believe everything.

Picture books are what I love the most. I just bought ATUA: Māori Gods and Heroes by Gavin Bishop. What an incredible job!

Right now, I’m working on a new “Bum” story. What started as a “one-off” crazy idea turned into a series with the Red Pants Boy bringing together friends, family, and new adventures. Also bring together reluctant readers. I believe the love of reading is caught not taught and I was delighted to hear of so many children who have been ‘hooked’ into reading with these books.

Kia pai to kotou panuitanga!
