If you liked House of the Dragon, the first book you’ll want to buy is Fire & Blood. Rather than your typical fantasy novel, the book is written from the perspective of a fictional historian in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, called Archmaester Gyldayn. It tells the story of the Targaryen dynasty and is even clearly biased in parts, due to Gyldayn’s own opinions. This is the first of two proposed volumes, the second of which has not yet been released.

Once you’ve gone through the fiery history of House Targaryen, you can move on to the events we’ve seen unfold throughout Game of Thrones. The fourth novel in this particular series, A feast for the crowsabandoned in 2005, before the last opus, A dance with dragonscame out in 2011.

Martin worked on his penultimate entry in this series, The Winds of Winter, for more than a decade now. He started the novel in 2010, but couldn’t find the time to finish it. There is still no official release date for the book, which will be followed by a spring dream.
