Australian romance novel addict gets help from hypnotist

Many people suffer from an addiction, be it online shopping, social media, food or alcohol.

But Marina Schaumuller’s addiction is really strange.

However, after rapidly reading up to four books a day and 50,000 books in her lifetime, she suddenly gave up.

“I haven’t touched a book for two weeks now, in fact the thousands I had in the house have now been thrown away,” Ms Schaumuller said proudly.

How this happened is truly remarkable, but first… who can read so many books and nothing but romance?

“My addiction started when I was a teenager. I was bullied at school so I read romance as an escape and saw myself looking pretty and running away with the handsome prince,” she said.

But over the decades, Ms Schaumuller continued to read long after the bullying ended.

“Sometimes I will start reading at four in the morning and not finish until two the next morning,” Ms Schaumuller said.

“I’ve missed so many things in life because of my addiction. I want to do things with my husband Erhard but I can’t find the time between all the books.”

“Once it starts, it doesn’t stop,” Schaumuller said.

“And I feel a bit left out.”

Over the years, she had watched hypnotherapist Mark Stephens help people break bad habits, whether it was food addiction and smoking or fears such as needles, which held many people back. to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

He had remarkable success and Mrs. Schaumuller thought he might be the man to help her.

So Mr. Stephens worked with Ms. Schaumuller, using hypnotherapy relaxation techniques and aversion therapy to distract her from reading novels.

After an hour, she said, “I don’t have the same attraction for them anymore.”

Mr. Stephens continued the sessions for a few more days, and now two weeks later Mrs. Schaumuller has cleared the house of romance novels and has not read a word of them.

“I feel like I got my life back,” she said.

And her husband, Mr. Schaumuller, is a happy man.
